Karamu High School had a tree surrounded by artificial turf. Over time the tree had roots that pushed up the turf and made the area unsightly and potentially unsafe.
#1 Artificial Turf installation - at the beginning
The existing artificial turf had been lifted and damaged by surface roots from a medium-sized tree, leaving the area uneven. We removed the roots, re-prepared the base, and installed new turf—bringing the space back to a level, tidy, and usable condition.
#2 Artificial Turf installation - digger removing turf
Using our compact digger, we efficiently removed the existing turf and loaded it onto our tipper truck for disposal. We then removed the remaining tree roots, ensuring all leftover mulch from the earlier stump grinding was fully cleared to prepare the area properly.
#3 Artificial Turf installation - preparing the ground
After removing the turf, we cleared the area by taking out the bench seat and rubbish bin. The site was then excavated 150mm deep using our digger, ready for rebuilding. We installed and compacted layers of basecourse, carefully bringing the surface back up to the final level for a strong, long-lasting result.
#4 Artificial Turf installation - laying artificial turf
The artificial turf was then laid, with sterile sand applied to weigh it down and help the individual grass blades stand upright. We use sterile sand rather than beach sand, as it prevents the surface from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and unpleasant odours—keeping the area low-maintenance and hygienic.
#4 Artificial Turf installation - Final touches

We finished by brushing the turf to give it a natural, even appearance, then reinstalled the seating—leaving the area clean, level, and ready to use.
