#1 Backyard Landscaping Project Napier The Design Phase
Every successful landscaping project starts with a plan.
For this project, Backyard Landscaping Project Napier, a detailed garden design was prepared to help visualise how the finished space would look. The design incorporated several key elements including a custom rectangular pond, large-format paving, reclaimed brick detailing, planting areas, and a new concrete patio that would provide additional outdoor living space.

#2 Before We Started
Before work began, the backyard consisted of existing pathways, lawn areas, planting beds, and an older pond feature. While the space had potential, it wasn't making the most of the available area and lacked a clear focal point.
The client wanted a more structured outdoor environment that would be both attractive and practical while still blending naturally into the surrounding garden.

#3 Creating the New Pond Feature
One of the most distinctive elements of this project was the custom rectangular pond that would become the centrepiece of the new outdoor living area.
An existing metal planter was repurposed to create the pond structure, helping achieve a unique appearance while making use of existing materials. The pond location was carefully marked out and positioned to become a focal point when viewed from both the house and the garden.
The pond was designed to work alongside the paving and landscaping to create a calm and visually appealing outdoor space.
#4 Setting Out the Pavers and Reclaimed Brick Detailing
With the pond location established, work began on positioning the large-format pavers and reclaimed bricks.
One of the key objectives was to retain the character of the property by reusing existing bricks wherever possible. The reclaimed bricks were carefully cleaned and incorporated into the design to create decorative borders around the paving and pond feature.
Before anything was permanently fixed in place, the paving was dry-laid to ensure the final layout aligned with the garden designer's vision.
This stage allowed the entire outdoor living area to be visualised before construction continued.
#4 Building the Paving and Pond Area
Once the layout had been confirmed, the paving installation moved ahead.
The large-format pavers created clean lines and a modern appearance while the reclaimed brick detailing introduced warmth and character. The contrast between the contemporary paving and traditional brickwork helped create a unique outdoor environment that respected the age and style of the property.
As construction progressed, the pond feature became increasingly integrated into the surrounding paving layout.
#5 Preparing for the Concrete Patio
While the paving and pond feature were taking shape, attention turned to expanding the outdoor living space with a new concrete patio.
The existing lawn area was excavated and prepared to receive a new concrete slab. Reclaimed bricks were again incorporated around the perimeter to tie the patio into the rest of the landscape design.
This stage also included preparation work for a small driveway concrete repair area.
Proper preparation is critical to the long-term performance of any concrete installation, and careful attention was paid to excavation, compaction, drainage, and levels before concrete placement began.
#6 Reclaimed Brick Edging Detail
A standout feature of this project was the extensive use of reclaimed bricks.
Rather than discarding materials already present on the property, they were incorporated into the design to create decorative edging around the paving, pond, and patio areas.
This approach helped preserve the character of the property while reducing waste and creating a unique finish that could not be replicated using new materials alone.
The technical detail drawings show how the brick edging was integrated into the overall construction.
#7 Concrete Placement and Finishing
With the preparation work complete, the new concrete patio was placed and finished.
The finished patio provides a practical outdoor entertaining area that complements both the paving and the pond feature. The reclaimed brick borders help visually connect all elements of the project and create a seamless transition between old and new materials.
