If you’re dealing with sloping ground, erosion, or want to upgrade your outdoor space, a rock retaining wall is one of the most durable and visually appealing solutions available in New Zealand.
At Everyday Contractors, we specialise in custom stone and rock retaining walls across Napier, Hastings, and Havelock North, combining structural strength with natural beauty.
What Is a Rock Retaining Wall?
A rock retaining wall is a structure built to hold back soil and prevent land movement. It’s commonly used for:
Sloped sections
Driveway support
Garden terraces
Erosion control
Property boundaries
Using natural stone or limestone, these walls blend seamlessly into the landscape while providing long-term structural support.

Why Choose Rock or Limestone Retaining Walls?
1. Built to Last
Natural stone walls are incredibly strong and can last decades with minimal maintenance. Unlike timber, they won’t rot or degrade over time.
2. Natural Look That Adds Value
Rock walls enhance the appearance of your property and can significantly increase street appeal—especially in areas like Havelock North and Napier, where landscaping matters.
3. Low Maintenance
Once installed correctly, stone retaining walls require very little upkeep compared to other materials.
4. Environmentally Friendly
Using natural stone is a sustainable option that works with the landscape rather than against it.
Cost of Rock Retaining Walls in New Zealand
The cost of a retaining wall depends on several factors:
Wall height and length
Type of stone (e.g. limestone vs fieldstone)
Site access and preparation
Drainage requirements
Labour and design complexity
Typical Price Guide:
Small garden walls: from $300–$600 per m²
Medium structural walls: $600–$1,000+ per m²
Large or engineered walls: custom pricing required
For an accurate price, it’s best to get a site-specific quote.
Our Installation Process
At Everyday Contractors, we follow a proven process to ensure your wall is both strong and long-lasting:
1. Site Preparation
We excavate and level the area, ensuring a solid foundation.
2. Base & Drainage
Proper drainage is critical. We install base materials and drainage systems to prevent water pressure build-up.
3. Stone Placement
Each rock is carefully placed and fitted for strength and stability.
4. Finishing
We shape and tidy the wall for a clean, natural look that complements your property.
Do You Need Consent?
In New Zealand, retaining walls may require consent depending on:
Height (typically over 1.5 metres)
Load-bearing conditions
Proximity to boundaries
We can guide you through this process if needed.

Olek had an overgrown bank next to the neighbours driveway. He asked us to create a decorative retaining wall that will hold the soil back and look pretty. He elected to have a rock wall made using local lime stone and cement.
#1 Rock retaining wall - at the beginning
When we first arrived the bank was heavily overgrown with Ivy. We cut that back to expose the soil behind.
#2 Rock retaining wall - laying the rocks
We brought in our rocks and began to assemble. The wall is made quite thick (400mm) as we need the strength to hold the soil back.
#3 Rock retaining wall - Completed
In a couple of days the wall in completed including a flat concrete top.
