Vehicle Access Replacement in Napier Using Exposed Aggregate Concrete

The vehicle access is the section connecting a residential driveway to the road. Although it is only a relatively small area, it must cope with regular vehicle traffic while providing a smooth transition between the driveway and street.
For this Napier project, the existing vehicle access had deteriorated and needed to be completely replaced. Everyday Contractors removed the old surface, prepared and reinforced the new foundation, and installed a new exposed aggregate concrete vehicle access.
The finished concrete provides a stronger, tidier entrance that complements the existing home and driveway.
Why did this vehicle access need replacing?
The existing surface was visibly worn, cracked and uneven. Once concrete reaches this condition, patching individual sections may improve its appearance temporarily, but it will not necessarily address problems beneath the surface.
Replacing the complete vehicle access allowed us to remove the deteriorated concrete and inspect the area underneath. We could then rebuild the foundation and install a properly prepared new concrete surface.
Our first video records the condition of the vehicle access before construction began. This is useful because photographs do not always show the full extent of cracking, uneven levels and general deterioration.
Removing the old vehicle access

The first stage was to break up and remove the old concrete. We used machinery to complete the demolition efficiently while keeping the work within the required area.
Once the old concrete and loose material had been removed, the site could be excavated to create room for the new foundation and concrete. Good preparation is particularly important for an area that will regularly carry the weight of vehicles.

A concrete surface is only as reliable as the ground underneath it. After excavation, basecourse was placed and prepared to create a stable foundation.
Formwork was then installed to establish the boundaries and finished levels of the new vehicle access. Reinforcing steel mesh was positioned within the area before the concrete pour.

These preparation stages are largely hidden once the concrete has been poured, but they are an important part of the completed job.
Installing the exposed aggregate concrete

Once the preparation and reinforcing were complete, the concrete truck arrived and the new concrete was placed.
The team distributed and worked the concrete across the prepared area, maintaining the required shape and levels. The surface was then finished in preparation for exposing the aggregate.
Exposed aggregate concrete contains decorative stones that become visible at the surface. After the concrete has reached the appropriate stage, the top layer is carefully washed back to reveal the aggregate underneath.
The result is a textured finish with more visual variation than standard plain concrete.
Exposed aggregate versus plain concrete

Plain concrete normally has a smooth or lightly textured cement-grey surface. It is a practical option for driveways, vehicle accesses, paths and other outdoor areas where a straightforward concrete finish is wanted.
Exposed aggregate is processed so that the stones within the concrete are visible at the surface. This produces a more decorative appearance and a textured finish.
The main differences include:
Appearance: Plain concrete has a more uniform grey finish, while exposed aggregate displays the colour and variation of the stones.
Texture: Exposed aggregate has a noticeably more textured surface.
Process: Exposed aggregate requires an additional surface-exposure stage after placement.
Cost: Exposed aggregate generally costs more because of the selected mix and additional work required to achieve the finish.
Suitability: The right choice depends on the surrounding property, the client’s preferred appearance and the available budget.
Neither finish is automatically the correct choice for every property. For this Napier home, exposed aggregate provided an attractive transition between the street and the existing driveway.

The new exposed aggregate surface has replaced the cracked and deteriorated entrance with a properly prepared, reinforced concrete vehicle access.
