Replacing an Old Concrete Footpath With a Durable New Walkway
A well-built concrete footpath does more than provide access around your home. It improves safety, enhances the appearance of your property, and creates a durable surface that can withstand years of use.
In this project, the Everyday Contractors team replaced an ageing concrete footpath with a brand-new reinforced concrete walkway. The project involved demolition of the existing path, excavation, base preparation, reinforcing, concrete placement, finishing, and final clean-up.
This project was completed in Napier, and we regularly provide concrete construction services throughout Napier, Hastings, and Havelock North.
If you're considering replacing an old footpath, driveway, patio, or concrete area, this project provides a great insight into the process from start to finish.
Before We Started
The existing footpath had reached the end of its service life and was showing signs of age and deterioration. Before beginning construction, we assessed the site, confirmed levels and access requirements, and planned the most efficient method for removing the old concrete.
One challenge with this project was the narrow access alongside the house. Careful planning was required to ensure demolition and removal could be completed efficiently while protecting the surrounding lawn and landscaping.
Removing the Existing Concrete Footpath
The first stage involved breaking up and removing the old concrete footpath.
Using specialised demolition equipment, we carefully removed the existing pathway while minimising disruption to the surrounding property. All broken concrete was separated and prepared for removal from site.
Removing deteriorated concrete is an important first step because any new concrete is only as good as the foundation beneath it. Proper demolition ensures the new footpath can be constructed to modern standards and achieve maximum longevity.
Tight Access Concrete Removal Using Our Bobcat MT100
One of the highlights of this project was the use of our Bobcat MT100 mini track loader.
Many homeowners assume machinery cannot access narrow spaces between buildings. The Bobcat MT100 allows us to transport materials and remove demolition waste efficiently, even where access is limited.
To protect the client's lawn, timber tracking was placed on the grass. This allowed the machine to safely transport broken concrete from the work area to the truck without causing unnecessary damage to the surrounding landscape.
This combination of compact machinery and careful site management helps us complete projects faster while protecting our clients' properties.
Excavation Complete and Basecourse Installation Begins
Once demolition was completed, the site was excavated and prepared for the new footpath.
A quality concrete footpath starts long before concrete is poured. Proper excavation ensures the correct depth is achieved and provides room for a strong compacted foundation.
Basecourse material was delivered to site and carefully spread throughout the walkway area. The basecourse forms the foundation that supports the concrete slab and helps prevent future settlement.
Installing Starter Rods and Reinforcing
To ensure the new footpath integrated properly with existing concrete sections, starter rods were drilled and installed where required.
These reinforcing connections help tie new and existing concrete together and reduce the likelihood of movement between sections.
Reinforcing mesh was then installed throughout the footpath. Steel reinforcing adds strength to the concrete and helps improve durability over the life of the footpath.
With the basecourse compacted, reinforcing mesh installed, and formwork completed, the project was ready for concrete placement.
Preparation Complete – Ready for Concrete

At this stage, all groundwork had been completed.
The footpath had been excavated to the correct depth, the basecourse compacted, reinforcing mesh installed, and formwork positioned ready for the concrete pour.
This preparation stage is one of the most important parts of any concrete project. A properly prepared foundation helps ensure a long-lasting result and reduces the risk of future movement or cracking.
Concrete Placement Begins
With all preparation complete, concrete was delivered to site and carefully placed into the prepared walkway.
Our team worked methodically to rake and distribute the concrete evenly throughout the footpath. Achieving the correct levels during placement is critical to ensuring proper drainage and a professional finished appearance.
Careful placement also helps ensure the reinforcing remains correctly positioned within the slab.
Bull Floating and Surface Finishing
After placement, the concrete surface was bull floated.
Bull floating helps level the concrete, remove minor imperfections, and create a smooth, consistent surface prior to final finishing.
This process is an important part of achieving a professional result. It helps prepare the concrete for finishing while ensuring the footpath remains level and visually appealing.
Attention to detail during the finishing process is what separates an average concrete job from one that will look good for years to come.
The Finished Concrete Footpath
The completed footpath provides a clean, durable, and attractive accessway around the property.
The new reinforced concrete walkway not only improves the appearance of the home but also provides a safe and practical surface for everyday use.
From demolition through to final finishing, every stage of the project was carefully managed to ensure a high-quality outcome for the homeowner.
Client Feedback
One of the most rewarding parts of any project is hearing feedback from satisfied clients.
After completion, Peter shared his thoughts on the finished footpath and the overall experience working with Everyday Contractors.
We greatly appreciate client feedback as it helps future customers understand the level of workmanship and service they can expect when working with our team.
