Sometimes we can pull a fence straight, add a few new posts and generally tidy things up. This is often the case when there is accidental damage such as a tree branch breaking off. However, more often, we are called when one section has failed and although we could fix that part, the actual age of the fence is so old that this repair is unlikely to be the only issue the fence has. The posts are often nearing the end of their life, there are rust holes in the sheets or there have been other temporary repairs. New sheets will not screw to rotten timber and really why bother? Everything has a certain life expectancy and when the fence is too old, it is better to take it out and install and new fence that will be good for another 30+ years.

This old corrugated iron fence had protected the property for decades, but time had finally caught up with it. Several posts had rotted at ground level, the fence was leaning noticeably, and years of small repairs were no longer enough. #3 Step 1 – Inspecting the Existing Fence
When we arrive at a fence that has issues, we are typically looking to see if it can be fixed. We look at post spacings, are the posts straight and the condition of fence rails.
If we are going to replace the fence we also check to see how the old fence lines up on the property boundary, check for underground services and look for other issues such as height and drainage.
There also has to have good access to the property. So are there enough gates and are they wide enough for modern cars.
There is a lot to consider as replacing a fence is more than simply pulling out old posts.
#4 Step 2 – Carefully Removing the Old Corrugated Iron
We need to careful with the old iron as it is almost always rusted, has sharp edges and nails that hang half out of any loose sheets.
Removing an old corrugated iron fence is often the messiest part of the project. Rusted fixings, loose nails and deteriorated timber all need to be handled carefully.
We remove the sheets one section at a time, stack them neatly and leave the site safe before beginning construction of the new fence. This means everyone is safe, the job site is tidy and we can easily remove and dump as required. Most often the sheets to the recycle yard or are given to a farmer for farm fencing.
The old fences rarely had a concrete nib unless they were at the front of the house. We easily remove the old concrete nib and dump it before starting to prepare for the new fence.

#5 Step 3 – Setting New Steel Posts
This stage of the job is all about getting the posts spaced accurately and set to the correct height. We use string lines to ensure the new posts are in perfect alignment. The posts have concrete footings and are left to cure for a day before we pour the concrete nib.
If posts aren't perfectly aligned, every panel afterwards will also be out. So, it is important to get this part right.
Although we'd love to finish every fence in a single day, allowing the concrete around the posts to cure properly gives the fence its long-term strength. Waiting until the following day before installing the nib and sheets means the finished fence is straighter and far more durable.
We laser the post heights so every rail lines up perfectly. We also double-check post centres before the concrete cures. Spending an extra few minutes at this stage prevents bowed fence lines and uneven sheet spacing later in the build.
#6 Step 4 – Installing the Rails
We only use excellent quality colour steel rails to ensure they will not twisting and have good connections. The height of the posts is set by laser, so when you stand back the top of the fence is exactly the same height no matter how long the fence is.
#7 Step 5 – Installing the Colour Steel Sheets
This is where the transformation happens. In just a few minutes each bay is quickly assembled. There are three sheets per bay and cover 2.35m. Height can be a maximum of 1.85m. The standard sheets are 1.8, 1.5 and 1.2m.
The posts have coloured caps to round off the finished job. We inspect both sides of the fence to ensure everything is neat and tidy for both sides.

Usually not.

Yes, you must get your neighbour's consent first. If you want them to share the cost you can serve a formal Fencing Notice to your neighbour. This notice should detail the design, costs, and timeline, and they have 21 days to respond or object.
