Garapa decking is a premium hardwood decking option that’s becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand for its durability, appearance, and long lifespan.
In this project, Everyday Contractors installed a garapa deck for a property in Napier, handling everything from preparation to final finish. Below, we explain what garapa decking is, how much it costs, and why it’s a great choice for outdoor spaces.
What is Garapa Decking?
Garapa decking is a dense, durable hardwood decking material known for its natural golden colour, strength, and resistance to weather and wear.
It’s commonly used for:
Outdoor decks and entertaining areas
Pool surrounds
High-end residential projects
Key benefits of garapa decking:
Long lifespan – highly durable hardwood
Low maintenance (compared to softwoods)
Natural resistance – handles moisture and outdoor conditions well
Premium appearance – warm, golden timber finish
Garapa is often chosen by homeowners who want a high-quality deck that will last for years with minimal issues.
How Much Does Garapa Decking Cost in NZ?
Garapa decking is considered a premium option, so pricing is higher than standard pine decking.
Typical price range:
$350 – $700+ per m² installed
Factors that affect cost:
Deck size and layout
Ground conditions and foundation work
Access to the site
Substructure requirements
Finishing and detailing
For an accurate price, the site needs to be assessed in person.
Garapa vs Pine vs Kwila Decking
Here’s how garapa compares to other common decking options:
Feature | Garapa | Pine | Kwila |
Lifespan | 25+ years | 10–15 years | 20–30 years |
Maintenance | Low–Medium | High | Medium |
Cost | High | Low | Medium–High |
Appearance | Light golden | Treated look | Dark hardwood |
Garapa is ideal if you want a premium look with long-term durability.
How Garapa Decking is Installed
For this decking project in Napier, we followed a structured process to ensure a high-quality finish.
1. Site Preparation
We prepared the area and ensured a solid base for the deck structure.
2. Substructure Construction
A strong and level subframe was built to support the decking boards.
3. Decking Installation
Garapa boards were carefully installed with proper spacing and alignment to allow for natural movement.
4. Finishing
The deck was cleaned and finished to enhance the natural timber appearance.
Proper installation is essential to ensure the deck remains stable and performs well over time.
Real Project: Garapa Deck Installation in Napier
This project was completed for a residential property in Napier. The client wanted:
A premium outdoor space for entertaining
A durable decking solution
A natural timber finish
The finished result is a high-quality garapa deck that enhances the outdoor area and adds long-term value to the property.
There are few things more exciting than having a new pool installed at your house.
#1 Diggers and chainsaws to clear the way
We had to remove 3 trees and a hedge before we could get to the back patio. Once they were gone we were able to start cutting and removing the old concrete. When it was all clear Monty could arrive and install the pool.
#2 Coping stones around top of pool

With the pool installed we were able to start installing the coping stones around the top of the pool.

#3 Building the Garapa Deck
There is a surprising amount of timber that goes into building a deck. Here you can see all the sub framing that has to be perfectly level before the Garapa Decking can be added.
Visit our decking page for more decking ideas or see our building page if you want a wall.
#4 Stylish glass balustrade

Glass balustrades mean the family can have unobstructed views of the pool from the house. The glass is 1.2m and conforms to the necessary regulations. The glass gate has self closing hinges and a latch children cannot open.
#5 Completed project

The job is complete and the clients are very happy. I should have said that we also built the back wall with lights for extra privacy as the old fence was a bit tired and not high enough.
Expert Tip from Everyday Contractors
In our experience, the most important part of a hardwood deck like garapa is getting the substructure and spacing right.
A common mistake we see is poor airflow under the deck, which can reduce the lifespan of even high-quality timber. Proper design and installation help avoid this.
