Pergolas are a popular way to enhance outdoor living spaces in New Zealand, providing shade, structure, and a feature for entertaining areas.
In this project, Everyday Contractors built a custom macrocarpa pergola for a property in Napier. Below, we explain what pergolas are, the benefits of using macrocarpa timber, what they cost, and how they’re built.
What is a Pergola?
A pergola is an outdoor structure made from timber or other materials that provides partial shade and defines an outdoor space such as a deck or patio.
Pergolas are commonly used for:
Outdoor entertaining areas
Decks and patios
Garden features
They help create a functional and visually appealing outdoor environment.
Why Choose Macrocarpa for a Pergola?
Macrocarpa is a popular timber choice in New Zealand due to its natural durability and appearance.
Benefits of macrocarpa timber:
Natural resistance to decay and insects
Warm, natural appearance
Strong and durable
Suitable for outdoor conditions
Macrocarpa pergolas are often chosen for their natural look and long-lasting performance.
How Much Does a Pergola Cost in NZ?
The cost of building a pergola in New Zealand depends on the size, materials, and design.
Typical factors affecting cost:
Size and complexity
Timber type (macrocarpa, pine, etc.)
Site conditions
Design features
Because every pergola is custom-built, an on-site assessment is usually needed to provide an accurate estimate.
Macrocarpa vs Pine Pergolas
Feature | Macrocarpa | Pine |
Durability | High | Medium |
Maintenance | Low–Medium | Medium–High |
Appearance | Natural timber | Treated finish |
Cost | Higher | Lower |
Macrocarpa is ideal for homeowners who want a premium, natural timber pergola.
How Pergolas Are Built
For this project in Napier, we followed a structured process to ensure a strong and clean finish.
1. Site Preparation
Preparing the area and ensuring a stable base for the structure.
2. Structural Setup
Installing posts and beams to create the pergola frame.
3. Construction
Building and securing the pergola components.
4. Finishing
Final adjustments and detailing to complete the structure.
Proper construction ensures the pergola is durable and safe for long-term use.

Expert Insight from Everyday Contractors
In our experience, the most important part of building a pergola is ensuring the structure is properly anchored and aligned.
A common mistake is underestimating the importance of foundation and spacing, which can affect durability over time.

In addition to assembling the ready-made pergolas as an onsite service, we take pride in our craftsmanship when it comes to building Macrocarpa Pergolas. Over the years, we have constructed dozens of these impressive structures. The posts are a sturdy 200mm wide, and the beams are available in either 200mm or 250mm tall profiles, each with a substantial thickness of 50mm. This combination gives the pergola a remarkably solid feel and presence. All the timber features a slightly rough bandsaw finish, perfectly complementing the rugged aesthetic and making each pergola a standout addition to any outdoor space.
#1 Completed Macrocarpa Pergola

The sides are left open as we didn't want to enclose this at all.
#2 We set the Macrocarpa posts 700mm deep.
The challenge with this job was making sure we didn't get soil mixed in with all the white stone chip. We had to cut the pavers to allow us to install the posts where we wanted.
Before we left for the day the guys fixed the spouting that had been damaged by the boat. It was a relatively easy fix but it had been busted for a while and the water was starting to damage the soffit and fascia.
#3 The bearers and rafters are installed next.
Normally we install the purlins and that is the job completed. But these clients wanted a flat roof installed so they could relax in the evening watching the stars with a little protection from the rain.
#4 Installing the polycarbonate sheets.
We has these sent down from Auckland as a special order. This allowed us to have the full length covered with no joins on the long run. The joins between the sheets were designed to be hidden by the purlins so when you looked up, you only saw the wood. The 6mm thick polycarbonate sheets are completely clear.
#5 Macrocarpa Pergola completed.
Everything is nice and tidy again. No soil or wood shavings in the white stone chip.
#6 Original Macrocarpa Pergola built 5yrs earlier.

See how the timber has silvered. This is normal for all timber left outside in Hawkes Bay. You can stain, paint or just oil the timber to extend it's life. The clients installed lights on this pergola.
