Concrete work is a key part of many construction and landscaping projects, from driveways and paths to foundations and site preparation.
At Everyday Contractors, we handle more than just basic concrete laying. In this project, we completed a range of concrete and site work for a property in Napier. Below, we explain what concrete contractors do, what’s involved in the process, and how it fits into larger projects.
What Do Concrete Contractors Do?
Concrete contractors are responsible for preparing, placing, and finishing concrete for a range of residential and construction projects.
This can include:
Driveways and pathways
Foundations and slabs
Site preparation and base work
Concrete edging and features
Concrete work is often one of the most important stages of a project, as it provides the foundation for long-term durability.
What Services Are Included in Concrete Work?
Concrete projects often involve more than just pouring concrete. A complete job may include:
Site Preparation
Clearing and preparing the area, including excavation and base work.
Formwork and Setup
Creating the framework that shapes the concrete.
Pouring and Finishing
Placing and finishing the concrete to ensure strength and a clean appearance.
Integration with Other Work
Coordinating with landscaping, drainage, or construction work.
A well-executed concrete job ensures the structure is strong, level, and built to last.
How Much Does Concrete Work Cost in NZ?
The cost of concrete work in New Zealand varies depending on the type and size of the project.
Typical factors affecting cost:
Size of the area
Ground conditions
Access to the site
Thickness and reinforcement requirements
Finishing details
Because every project is different, an on-site assessment is usually needed for accurate pricing.
Real Project: Concrete and Site Work in Napier
For this project in Napier, we were brought in to complete concrete work alongside other site preparation tasks.
The work included:
Preparing the site and base
Completing concrete installation
Ensuring proper levels and finish
Coordinating with surrounding work
The goal was to create a solid, durable surface that would support the rest of the project.
Expert Insight from Everyday Contractors
In our experience, the most important part of concrete work is proper preparation before pouring.
A common mistake is rushing the base preparation, which can lead to cracking or uneven surfaces later. Getting the groundwork right is essential for long-term performance.

Our team are great at just doing everything. Steve wanted the old concrete gone, his fence straightened up and new sliding gate. No problem, we can do it all with just our regular team.
This was an odd initial request. The client had old stamped concrete that had cracked and he wanted to replace it with new concrete and by the way the vehicle access was not in alignment with the driveway! Our solution was to change the fence line to suit the vehicle access and concrete lay so it would match the new wider gate opening. Take a look at our pictures and see what you think.

#1 Finished driveway with 4m wide sliding gate

The wider gate makes access so much easier. Especially when reversing the motorhome or trailer back in.
#2 We prepared the area using our digger
Our digger made quick work of preparing the area. We took away the old concrete and hedges before bringing in crushed concrete to make a firm base.
#3 Compacting base layer and setting steel mesh
Once the base was prepared we finished setting out the boxing (wooden edge). Next the sheets of seismic mesh were brought in and set on bar chairs ready for concrete laying.
#4 Big day - Concrete laying begins in earnest.
We try to get the concrete truck to arrive around 7:30 or 8am so we have plenty of time to place the concrete before the day really heats up. This was a lovely day with a clear blue sky.
