Thinking about installing PVC fencing in New Zealand? Here’s what it costs, how it’s installed, and whether it’s the right option for your property. We regularly install PVC fencing across Napier and Hawke’s Bay.

PVC fencing is becoming an increasingly popular choice for New Zealand homeowners looking for a clean, modern, and low-maintenance fencing solution. It is a fencing solution made from durable plastic that won’t rot, warp, or require repainting like traditional timber fencing.

If you're planning a fence in Napier or Hawke’s Bay, we can handle the full installation — from site prep to final finish

In this project, we installed a PVC fence for a new build in Napier/Hastings, handling everything from ground preparation through to final panel installation. Below, we break down how PVC fencing works, what it costs, and why more homeowners are choosing it.

What is PVC Fencing?

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) fencing is a durable, weather-resistant alternative to traditional timber fencing. It’s designed to withstand harsh outdoor conditions without rotting, warping, or needing regular painting.

Key benefits of PVC fencing:

  • Low maintenance – no staining or painting required

  • Long lifespan – resistant to rot, rust, and insects

  • Clean appearance – modern and consistent finish

  • Weather resistant – handles New Zealand conditions well

PVC fencing is especially popular for new builds where homeowners want a long-term solution without ongoing upkeep.

How Much Does PVC Fencing Cost in NZ?

The cost of PVC fencing in New Zealand can vary depending on site conditions, fence height, and design.

Typical price range:

  • $180 – $400+ per metre installed

Factors that affect pricing:

  • Ground conditions (flat vs sloped)

  • Fence height and style

  • Access to the site

  • Preparation work required

For an accurate quote, it’s always best to assess the site in person.

PVC vs Timber vs Colour Steel Fencing

Choosing the right fencing material depends on your priorities. Here’s how PVC compares:

PVC Fencing

  • Low maintenance

  • Higher upfront cost

  • Long lifespan

  • Clean, modern look

Timber Fencing

  • Lower upfront cost

  • Requires ongoing maintenance (painting/staining)

  • Can warp or rot over time

Colour Steel Fencing

  • Strong and durable

  • Moderate maintenance

  • Limited style flexibility

PVC is often chosen by homeowners who want a “set and forget” fencing solution.

How PVC Fencing is Installed

In our experience installing these fences in Napier/Hastings, we follow a structured installation process to ensure a high-quality finish.

1. Ground Preparation

We started by levelling and preparing the ground to ensure a straight and consistent fence line.

2. Setting the Posts

Posts were carefully positioned and secured to create a strong, stable framework for the fence.

3. Installing Panels

Once the posts were set, the PVC panels were installed, ensuring proper alignment and spacing.

4. Final Finishing

The fence was checked, cleaned, and completed with a consistent, polished finish.

This process ensures the fence is not only visually clean but also structurally sound.

Real Project: PVC Fence Installation in Napier/Hastings

This installation was completed for a new build property in Napier/Hastings. We’ve found most homeowners in Napier choose PVC because it offers:

  • Require minimal maintenance

  • Match the modern look of the home

  • Last long-term without deterioration

The result was a clean, durable PVC fence that complements the property and will hold up well over time.

#1 PVC fencing - levelling the ground

Using our machines we were quickly able to clear up the house builders mess and prepare the area for our job. That included the driveway, landscaping and fence.

In our experience, proper ground preparation is the most important part of ensuring a PVC fence stays straight and durable long-term.

#2 PVC fencing - setting out the posts and nib

Once the ground was levelled we set the posts in concrete. Set up the wooden boxing and called in a truck. The concrete was placed and we were ready to install the panels.

#3 PVC fencing - inserting the panels

Okay, I might have forgotten to take any photos of us putting the panels in. It is easy to get stuck into the job and forget people still want to see the process. In our experience we usually install the panels in a day and the whole job looks great.

#4 PVC fencing - panels inserted & gate hung

All the panels are in place. I also finished laying the soil and was about to sow the grass seed. Most clients choose PVC for low maintenance. A simple wash with a hose and the fence is easily cleaned off.

#5 PVC fencing - all completed and grass growing

We were called back several months later to remove grass from next to the fence as the client decided he would like to have a garden.

PVC fencing is either 1.5m or 1.8m tall. The cost of trellis top or closed top is pretty much exactly the same so most people chose the open top unless they are looking for greater privacy.
