Creating proper vehicle access is an important part of many construction, subdivision, and landscaping projects in New Zealand. A well-built accessway ensures safe entry to a property and meets practical and regulatory requirements.

In this project, Everyday Contractors completed vehicle access work for a property in Napier. Below, we explain what vehicle access involves, what’s required, and how it’s completed.

What is Vehicle Access?

Vehicle access refers to creating a safe and usable entry point for vehicles to enter and exit a property, typically through a driveway or accessway.

This can include:

  • Driveway construction

  • Kerb crossings

  • Ground preparation and shaping

  • Drainage and surface work

Vehicle access is often required for:

  • New builds

  • Subdivisions

  • Property upgrades

What is Required for Vehicle Access in NZ?

Vehicle access must meet practical and council requirements.

Common requirements include:

  • Safe entry and exit to the road

  • Proper width and slope

  • Drainage to prevent water issues

  • Durable surface for long-term use

Requirements can vary depending on the location and project.

How Much Does Vehicle Access Cost in NZ?

The cost of creating vehicle access depends on the size and complexity of the job.

Factors that affect cost:

  • Length and width of the driveway

  • Ground conditions

  • Materials used (concrete, gravel, paving)

  • Drainage requirements

  • Access to the site

Because each site is different, an on-site assessment is usually needed.

How Vehicle Access is Constructed

For this project in Napier, we followed a structured process to ensure a durable and functional result.

1. Site Preparation

Clearing and shaping the area to prepare for construction.

2. Base and Foundation

Creating a stable base to support the driveway or accessway.

3. Surface Installation

Installing the chosen surface material.

4. Final Checks

Ensuring the access is safe, level, and ready for use.

Proper construction is key to long-term performance.

A common mistake is underestimating the importance of drainage and ground stability, which can lead to surface damage over time.

#1 Nearly Finished Vehicle Access

Vehicle Access nearly finished. Call Everyday Contractors for your concrete laying needs.

Here we are shaping the concrete. It is still a bit wet so we need to wait a bit

#2 We prepared the area using our digger

Our digger made quick work of preparing the area. We took away the old soil, cut the kerb and set out the boxing.

#3 Compacting base layer and setting steel mesh

Once the base was prepared we finished setting out the boxing (wooden edge). Next the sheets of seismic mesh were brought in and set on bar chairs ready for concrete laying.

This is the point the council visit and inspect our work. They are looking to make sure we have achieved the correct compaction levels. Not a problem with our big compactor.

#4 Big day - Concrete laying and shaping.

We normally try to get the concrete truck to arrive around 7:30 or 8am so we have plenty of time to place the concrete before the day really heats up but with these smaller jobs we can place later in the day without problems.

We finish the job with a special brush to leave the concrete with a slightly rough finish to avoid people slipping on the sloped concrete.
