If you're planning pool landscaping in Napier, Hastings or Hawke’s Bay, this project demonstrates what’s involved and the results you can expect.

What is Involved in Installing a Swimming Pool?

Swimming pool installation involves preparing the site, installing the pool structure, and completing surrounding landscaping to make the area safe, functional, and visually appealing.

This typically includes:

  • Site preparation and excavation

  • Pool installation (by specialist installers)

  • Surrounding landscaping and finishing

  • Accessways and safety features

  • Timber decking construction

  • Pool fencing (glass or aluminium for safety compliance)

  • Drainage and ground levelling

  • Lawn and garden landscaping

The surrounding work is just as important as the pool itself. Managing the full project ensures everything is built correctly and works together as one complete outdoor area.

Expert Insight from Everyday Contractors

In our experience, the most important part of a pool project is planning the surrounding space early.

A common mistake is focusing only on the pool itself, without considering access, drainage, and usability. Getting the landscaping right ensures the area works properly long-term.

The inspiration for this swimming pool came from Marissa's desire to swim and unwind outdoors in this picturesque rural environment. Monty from Barrier Reef Pools was responsible for installing the swimming pool. Our team was tasked with installing the decking, pouring the concrete, and setting up all the fencing.

#1 Just a patch of lawn before swimming pool

At the back of the house Marissa wanted to have a swimming pool where she could relax and enjoy the countryside air.

#2 We prepared the area using our digger

Barrier Reef Pools set the pool in place and passed the reins to us. We started with clearing the ground and getting the whole site ready for the building work to actually start.

#3 Laying concrete and cutting decorative lines

Once the base was prepared we finished setting out the boxing (wooden edge). Next the sheets of seismic mesh were brought in and set on bar chairs ready for concrete laying. After the concrete was placed we cut the concrete to form decorative lines that create squares 1m x 1m.

Concrete was poured around the pool to create durable walkways and outdoor living space.

Decorative cut lines were added to improve appearance and reduce cracking, creating a clean, modern finish.

#4 Big day - After concrete we built the Kwila decks

We try to get the concrete truck to arrive around 7:30 or 8am so we have plenty of time to place the concrete before the day really heats up. This was a lovely day with a clear blue sky.

#5 Competed job

Here we can see the completed job with its combination of black aluminium pool fencing and clear glass. We have Kwila decking on two sides and concrete on the other two.

Kwila hardwood decking was installed to create a warm, functional space around the pool.
